Local Crafts News: Make It in March! Woodworking Show

Check Out the Make It in March! Woodworking Show for Your Local Crafts Show Fix

We recently learned of a local crafts show for San Gabriel and Los Angeles woodworking enthusiasts happening right around the corner. If you’re a local with a woodworking passion and an interest in interacting with like minded folks over tools and projects, then it doesn’t get better than this.

As you may already be dismally aware, we don’t see a lot of these shows come out west. Big woodworking conferences and trade shows tend to congregate at central and eastern cities, leaving our local fans of the craft stuck in a lurch.

The opportunity to experience in-person demonstrations can’t be beat. How-to videos on YouTube are great and everything, but you can’t lean in for a closer look and you can’t ask the video questions–believe us, we’ve tried and it didn’t work out as expected.

Craft Projects, Refreshments, and Free Parking, Oh My!

The team at Rockler are dedicated to the idea of delivering a great woodworking show for all of the tradesmen and women out here. Their entire approach to this Saturday is really bringing alive the experience of the traveling show for our DIYers.

In order to make it very accessible, fun, and hopefully a big success this show is 100% free (even parking which usually comes at a premium in the Pasadena area). We hope that it gets a big attendance so that they consider doing more of these in the future.

They will have representatives from a number of major woodworking brands present for you to talk to and pick their brains about the right tools for different projects. You can talk to folks from General Finishes, SawStop, Powermatic, Makita, and Jet while you’re there. They will also be having an in-store demo of Taper Leg Construction around 11am.woodworking-demonstration

Honorable Mention of In-Store Demos

Whether you’re a newcomer to crafting with wood or an old hand, learning is a constant process. Keeping yourself sharp takes staying involved and ideally getting exposure to new techniques you may be unfamiliar with.

While we were learning about the show this Saturday, we found that the Rockler hosting it also has regular in-store demos throughout their calendar. So definitely check it out on their site here!

Here’s a small tease of demos they have coming up:

  • 3/17/2018 Taper Leg Construction – 11AM
This demo will take you through the step by step process of building tapered table legs with a full through flute on the outer edge.
  • 3/24/2018 Shutter Building – 11AM
This demo will take you through the step by step process of building Fixed louvered shutter doors for your cabinets or furniture.
  • 3/31/2018 Router Techniques, Featuring the New Router Lift – 11AM
This demo will be focused around advanced Router Table techniques doing door construction.
  • 4/7/2018 Table Saw Techniques – 11AM
This demo will focus around the safe use of the table saw by using the appropriate jigs such as Micro Jig push block, Rockler straight line rip/taper jig and the Rockler Crosscut sled.
  • 4/14/2018 Moto Saw form Bosch Tools Demo – 11AM
See all the ins and outs of this new tool from Bosch.
  • 4/21/2018 Template Routing – 11AM
Learn to create accurate, repeatable wooden parts using the template routing technique.

Pretty cool stuff! So we encourage you to check out the show, learn some cool tips and tricks while mixing it up with other woodworking enthusiasts, and then maybe find a future demo to head back for. Attending these small events can keep you inspired and motivated about your own projects! The show is at Rockler Pasadena on Saturday, March 17 from 9am – 6pm.
